Whether you are a full-time mom, a teacher, a pastor, or a writer (like me), taking a few moments at the beginning of the new year to establish your purpose, mission, and vision is a worthwhile endeavor. No matter what your journey looks like, or what dreams you are pursuing, having a clear purpose and goal set out before you will increase your chances of success ten-fold! Here's a foolproof 5-step formula for writing your own manifesto + free workbook.

I’ve heard it said that red is the hot, crazy girl of colors.

Red is the color of fire and blood; often associated with war, determination, passion and love.

The day that I used this foolproof formula to discover my purpose was the very same day I ordered my little red writing desk from Target.com.

Because taking the time to complete this exercise and draft my own manifesto helped me discover that  I was born to write.

And this writer needs a creative space that ignites her soul and inspires her craft.

The days crept by as I frequently scanned my front stoop in anticipation of the arrival of an enormous brown box highlighted with Target’s signature red tape.

I am grateful no one was around to witness my squeal of delight when that life-altering red desk arrived at my doorstep on a brisk Tuesday afternoon.

My mouth watered as I went to work unpacking, deciphering instructions, and piecing together a writing surface that reminded me of my two favorite candies–Twizzlers and Red Hot Tamales.

I left behind a trail of styrofoam blocks, bubble wrap, screwdrivers, and boxes as I lugged my prized possession into the master bedroom.

I lovingly situated my ruby-red desk in a place where the outdoor light caresses its corners and the sweeping valley views embrace and inspire it.

Because this little writing desk has a big job to do.

Its crimson stain serves as a constant reminder that I have been refined by fire and purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ.

Its fiery red color is an ever-present symbol the elements of pursuing a purpose-filled life: War. Determination. Passion. Love.

Over the past few months of writing at my firecracker desk, I’ve discovered that knowing my purpose and pursuing that purpose are two completely different things.

Because big dreams demand diligent and consistent effort.

What are your big dreams?

Are you willing to go to war and bleed for them; to passionately pursue them with determination and love?

If so, keep reading….because I created this free workbook with my fellow dreamers and passion-pursuers in mind!

No matter what your journey looks like, or what dreams you are pursuing, having a clear purpose and goal set out before you will increase your chances of success ten-fold!

My Foolproof 5-step Formula…

Step 1: Discover your Purpose

A purpose statement tells others what you do. It is a brief explanation of your heart’s desire. My Purpose: I write so that others may have hope.

Step 2: Focus your Mission

Your mission statement serves as a guide as you choose how you are going to pursue your purpose. My Mission: To inspire others to embrace the story God has inscribed on their hearts.

Step 3: Establish your Vision

A vision statement is how you intend to accomplish your mission. My Vision: By consistently sharing my own story and actively inviting others receive the hope that is in Christ alone.

Step 4: Find your Verse

Setting aside some time to find a Bible verse that serves as a compass for your Purpose, Mission and Vision is a valuable investment.

My Verse: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” -Ephesians 1:18-19

Step 5: Write your Manifesto

There is no right or wrong way to write a manifesto, the important thing is that you put pen to paper. Click Here to Read My Manifesto.

In this free downloadable workbook, I give practical advice on how to firmly establish your WHAT, WHY, and HOW along with 5 simple questions to help you discover your purpose and write your own manifesto.

Consider this workbook my free gift to you!

And if you feel like returning the favor, I always appreciate social media shares and shoutouts.

No, I more than appreciate them.

I adore them.

Almost as much as I adore Twizzlers, Red Hot Tamales, and my little red writing desk!

A few final thoughts…

It’s not always easy to sit down and put words to your hopes and dreams, but it is a worthwhile endeavor.

In all honesty, there have been moments when I’ve felt like returning my red desk to the Target store and sheepishly asking for a refund.

But I’m learning to enjoy the process, the brokenness, the uncertainty, and the hope of it all coming together someday to help other people make sense of the mess.

Experience has taught me that knowing and understanding my purpose will help me persevere when I feel like waving the white flag in defeat.

    1. You are too sweet…thanks Melanie. We will have to see what idea stirrs up enough passion and words in my heart to give me the inspiration to write a book on it. Only time will tell….

  1. My first writing space …a little antique desk in the corner of my bedroom by the window that had as much character as my dreams. When I outgrew that space I dusted off the inherited dining room furniture and propped up my iPad on an old Bible. I started with a blue tooth keyboard! And guess what …the walls in this room are red. Bright red. And oh, how God has grown my screen …my keyboard …my calling to write …one obedient and hard working step at a time. Keep following your calling and encouraging others along the way!
    Happy Tuesday!

Thank you for leading the way into finding who God has made us to be.

    1. If we aren’t growing, we’re shrinking….but growing hurts sometimes. I’m so grateful for you, Tiffiney. Thanks for sticking with me through all the growing pains and searching for purpose in my writing. Excited to see where God leads us in the upcoming years…..

    1. Saying a prayer over your manifesto writing session, don’t let too much time pass…you know how easy it is to put stuff like this off, but your passions are worth the persistence!

  6. I love this Sarah! Your red desk inspires me every time I see pictures of it. My favorite place to write is a little, white, round table in my church. I often go into town early before I start youth group just so I can write there for awhile. Our church is big, open and bright. I can feel the anointing all over me in there. I can also feel it writing at my kitchen table. Isn’t it great that places can inspire us but it’s because of God’s presence we move into transformation. Printed off the worksheet and I’m excited to work through it. Thanks friend! Sure appreciate you.

    1. I’m so glad you decided to print it off. I first did this exercise over a year ago and it gave me the courage to make some big changes that have really paid off (not financially, mind you, but in many other ways).

  7. Love all the red, Sarah, but even more I love your passion. It oozes through your words. My “little red desk” is actually a lap desk that goes everywhere with me, when I travel, when I sit outside in the spring and summer, and when I hunker down in my little office. Thanks for the free workbook. What a great resource!

  8. Sarah, this is so good! I love the fact that you found your red desk to be a passionate source of creative inspiration–and a powerful reminder that we are redeemed by the blood of Christ! Your Manifesto is amazing, and I definitely want to use your workbook to refine the purpose and mission God has placed on my heart as a new blogger! Thank you for this great resource!

  9. Sarah, First of all the story and symbolism you assigned to your desk I found fascinating and very edifying!

I sat and thought about what my purpose might be. Even though I blog, I don’t consider myself a writer. But you have given me food for thought to pray about what IS God’s purpose for me.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

  10. Thanks for this free gift, Sarah! And you’re so right about discovering our passion and crafting a personal manifesto. Oh! And just love that red desk! I’m sure that continues to light a fire under your writings each day you sit at it! 😉

    1. It’s so fun to have a piece of furniture that inspires you, and that’s just what my red desk does for me. I’m so glad you stopped by and pray that the workbook blesses you and gives you some clarity and direction as you pursue God’s best for your life.

  11. Sarah,

This is just too precious. I could hear your voice as I was reading it and it literally made my day to picture you at a red desk. I love your heart to pour into others Sarah. Thanks for bleeding His love so well.
    Bless you,
    Dawn
