My friend @sarahkoontz is launching her free #worthyofthecalling Bible study this week! Click To Tweet

As it is with any writing project, things have not gone as I had planned.

This free online Bible study project quickly exploded into something beyond what I could have ever imagined, and I’ve been swimming with all my might to keep my head above the rapids ever since.

So today, for just a moment, I want to invite you to journey with me back to the beginning.

Because the first step of faithfulness is always the most difficult. It is the point at which we are most vulnerable.

Doubts swirl and inadequacies scream!

But if we can find the courage to dive in to whatever it is God has called us to do, we will experience His abundant provision in the most powerful and humbling way.

Because God doesn’t meet us halfway. Ever!

He’s with us from beginning to end, supplying all we need to walk worthy of His calling on our life.

God’s work empowers our walk.
God’s Word reveals our worthiness.
God’s ways vanquish our worries.

The more time we spend in God’s Word, the more time God’s Word spends in us.Click To Tweet

I’ve been working on my first non-fiction book for the past year, and this spring as I was doing research for the book, I found myself returning to the book of Ephesians time and again.

I finally got the message and made a personal commitment to hang out in Ephesians for as long as it took to figure out what God was trying to teach me.

At first it was just for me, but it wasn’t long before I realized I just HAD TO write a Bible study on this book.

And I had to give it away for free. And I had to do it right away.

I knew it, deep in my soul—this was what God was calling me to do.

So I set aside my book project and started working on this free online Bible study.

It made no sense financially. It made no sense for my career. It made no sense for my family life.

But, if God was asking me to do it, well, He must simply know something I do not.

Will I trust God even when He makes no sense?

For me, writing a Bible study is like creating a beautiful piece of art.

The first few times I read a passage, I discover all I need to sketch out the key elements of the painting.

But it’s just a light pencil sketch, just a beginning….

Then I dig a bit deeper and learn all I can about the author and the audience.

This historical information helps me pick colors and paint the background of the scene.

Now that I’ve got my background painted, it’s time to study the original language and the original purpose of the book.

This is the part that often intimidates me, so I find someone trustworthy to journey alongside me.

An art instructor of sorts!

When I was working through the book of Ephesians, I asked my pastor for help and he shared several trustworthy resources with me.

These books and commentaries helped me to rightly divide the Word of God and kept my tendency to add a flourish of my own here and there in check.

I’ve sketched the scene, painted the background, and now I’m finally ready to paint the focal point of the scene.

This is when I take all I’ve learned (background, context, etc.) and let it all settle into my soul before asking myself this one question: What have I’ve learned that I just can’t not write about?

My answer to that question becomes my one thing, my key point, my main message.

For this free online Bible study of Ephesians it was this idea of worthiness.

I am worthy.
You are worthy.
We are worthy.

Because of what God has done for us, our worthiness in His sight is guaranteed!

It’s signed, sealed, and delivered.

Because of what God has done for us, our worthiness in His sight is guaranteed!Click To Tweet

We are worthy because God has made us worthy.

But, oh, how often I feel unworthy….

of God’s love.
of others’ love.
of my own love.

And I can’t possibly be the only person on the planet who struggles to align my feelings with what God says is true about me.

But Paul explains it all so beautifully in the book of Ephesians.

Maybe, if I can find a way to paint a portrait of this godly worthiness for my readers, my art will inspire them to dig deep into their Bible and learn how to walk in worthiness.

God, if that is what you want me to paint, then paint it I will. With every ounce of my being, I will create this piece of art for Your glory.

Do with it as you see fit!

I want to personally invite you to join me on this 31-day journey through the book of Ephesians.

Together we will learn about our identity in Christ and the spiritual wealth we have access to as daughters of God.

We will discover God has provided all we need to walk worthy of the calling we have received.

This study was crafted with busy women in mind and can easily be completed on your mobile device or computer.

  1. With so many options out there for online studies, I am so thankful that I saw this one. Thank you Sarah for allowing me to be a part of the launch team and experiencing the blessing of your wisdom, work, and heart for the Lord. You can read my review of this incredible study

  2. Sarah what a beautiful and honest post! I know this study is amazing, because I was honored to be a part of the launch. Worthy of the Calling really spoke to me. I too have battled feeling worthy, especially of God’s love. The book of Ephesians helps us realize who we are in Christ but also that we’re His beloved and worthy of Jesus’s love for us. I needed this study and it spoke to my soul. I love that you can dig deep into God’s word in just 15 minutes 5 days a week. Sarah writes in such a way that gives you understanding and engaging, plus she sprinkles in bits of humor to make it fun!! I loved this bible study of Ephesians and will be doing it again to continue to feed and nourish my soul. Sarah you did an amazing job of breaking down the book of Ephesians and bringing out the message. We are worthy!!!! I can’t wait to read your book when it comes out!!

    1. I am astounded by the vast number of women who struggle with their worthiness. I really believe it holds us back from embracing all God has for us. I’m hoping this study gives you some spiritual weapons to fight against those negative thoughts in the future. Understanding who we are in Christ is one of the most important, fortifying, steps of growing up in our faith! I can’t wait to read my book when it comes out either, maybe we could just skip to that step??? Phew! God is good, and I trust He has a beautiful plan for both our lives. So glad they have intersected and look forward to journeying with you for years to come.

  3. I love your openness in this post Sarah, it’s been a privilege to be a part of your launch team. Every time I go back to the study I get something new to take away as God speaks to me again in a different way. Day twelve is the most precious part of this study to me, so look out for that folks. I love how you speak of being rooted in love (no spoilers) but God has had me sitting in the word ABIDE for nearly two years and this whole study, especially day twelve spoke right into that. You can read more of my thoughts on the Worthy of the Calling study in my latest blog post here.

    1. Sharon, it really was an interesting post to write. It felt like the words were pouring straight out of my heart. I am so appreciative of you and your efforts to support the launch of this study. I’ve made so many friends through this journey, and I do hope you abide with me for many, many years!

  4. My biggest takeaway from Sarah’s study is how God loves me. I grew up only knowing conditional love. You do this and I will love you. I was worthy based on what I did.
I’ve struggled to understand how I can be loved by God, in spite of what I’ve done. Many days I don’t feel worthy!

God’s love for me is the way love is supposed to be. I can be assured of how to love through God’s example as I love my husband, kids and the other people God puts in my life.
I can be an imitator of God because He is the perfect example of love. I am worthy not because of what I’ve done, but what He has done for me!

    1. Oh, Julie! Thank you for being so very honest. Conditional love is something we’ve all experienced on one level or another. But what’s so sad is there are many people who have only experienced conditional love. Our experiences here on earth deeply effect our relationship with God, and it’s important for us to recognize how deeply we need to re-write our own code according to His Word. We are worthy even when we don’t feel worthy, by the grace of God. I do believe you’ve hit the key truth of this study!

  5. This study is absolutely awesome… bite sized chunks of God’s word everyday that leave you both filled with His love and hungry for more at the same time! I walked away from every day knowing that I am worthy… and I am lovable… despite what society tells me!

  6. I have read bible studies before and they are great opportunities to immerse yourself into God’s words. I also enjoy getting a new and fresh perspective on scripture, but honestly, I didn’t expect to be moved in the way I was with the Worthy of the Calling bible study! Sarah portrays such passion and knowledge in this study. I encourage you to commit to 15 minutes a day for 31-days! It really was a blessing that you can read more about Here.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Melissa. I just loved reading your blog post about how God spoke to you through this study. He is so good and He always meets us right where we are at.

  7. My take away from today’s study is that I AM worthy but how am I living up to and reflecting that worth to others……..

I grew up Catholic going to a Catholic school and constantly being told God’s love is conditional on my “good” behavior. As a convert to the Baptist faith, I always felt inferior because the Bible was not part of my upbringing. I knew about it, but it was not something we as Catholics immersed ourselves with in our everyday life. Now I am a practicing non-denomination Christian and learning so much about God’s love for us over the last few years. However, Sarah explains this in a very simple-to-read format.

Reading Sarah’s explanation that for no other reason than just being a believer I AM worthy made me look at things very differently today. It started my day on a positive note. Her statement of being a faithful servant and living as a faithful servant has made me more conscientious of my actions today.

Sarah has begun knocking down a wall of inferiority that has been built around my heart for years—in just 15 minutes.

I know what the rest of the study brings having been blessed with the opportunity to help Sarah launch this bible study. But I am doing the in depth study along with everyone else day-by-day over the next 31 days. I hope you are as blessed as I have been.

    1. Myra – Thank you for taking time to share a piece of your testimony with us. Your words remind me that God does not judge us in same way the world does. Not to say that He doesn’t judge us at all, because we all know He does. But once we have received the free gift of salvation, He judges us based on what Christ has done for us. Nothing more, nothing less. But I love how you have honed in on such an important point! We need to walk worthy because we are a reflection of God’s love for others. That’s why we need to learn these freeing truths, not because our actions earn us righteousness in the sight of God, but because they shine brightly in a world desperate for the kind of love only God can provide.

  8. My favorite take-away from the study: No matter where you are, or where you’ve been, God Loves you! You and I are Special to him. He wants us to seek him and find him. God offers an eternal inheritance to all who ask. Discover who you are in Christ – You are Worthy and Chosen!

    1. I agree Julie, the idea of receiving an eternal inheritance right here and right now. Not because of who we are, but because God (in His Grace) has chosen us is such a beautiful and freeing truth. Thanks for your support and encouragement in launching this study.

  9. Sarah, it has been a true honor and pleasure to be a part of the launch team for the #WorthyOfTheCalling Study. Thank you for writing this study in ways that make it so easy to understand, and enjoyable to read! Each day of this study is a blessing of it’s own. Each day I am reminded of how much God loves us, how forgiving He is, and that no matter what, no matter how big of a mess I make of things, or how many times I mess up, He still loves me, He meets me right there in the midst of my messes, and never gives up on me. I would say my main takeaway and what I have most been able to reflect on is this, I sometimes have those days that I do not feel worthy of much of anything, let alone God’s amazing love. But this study has reminded me that who I was before I became a Christian has no influence over who I am in Christ! I am saved by grace, I am a new creation, His love is amazing and perfect in every way, and when I am rooted in Him, I can grasp the depth of His love for me!

    1. Oh, Rachelle. You are such a blessing and I am grateful to know this study has blessed you. Our past no longer defines us. What a gift! And I think we need to remind ourselves, every time we feel unworthy, that our worthiness has very little to do with us. We owe it all to Christ! And oh, how He loves us.

  10. There is so much abut this study that I really liked. The Free part was a real plus, thank you Sarah for offering your 31 day Bible Study Free, that will bring it to so many more people. Knowing who we are IN CHRIST and how much we are loved is also a really strong point. The way Sarah brings each daily teaching to a “home touch place” is very practical. This is not an all super spiritual study but a take it home and use it study. The teaching on family and marriage was one of my favorite, but this quote I wrote in my journal from Day 8.
“Christians don’t manufacture good works; they manifest good works. We re simply a riverbed through which God’s goodness flows into a drought stricken world.” Wow! If you haven’t signed up it’s not too late. Do it today.

    1. Karen, I am so blessed to have been able to offer this study for free. Not to say it wasn’t a sacrifice, but the joy of many walking through these powerful truths has confirmed it was the right choice for this study. I really do believe the Bible is practical and applicable to our everyday lives, and am grateful to know that came through in the study.

  11. Love the short yet impactful time it takes to do this study. Love the refreshing look into Ephesians it’s making me see things in a new light and renewing my mind like never before.

  12. Sarah, your Bible study sounds wonderful! I’ve shared it in several places this morning! I LOVE how you talked about painting a picture. It is like that isn’t it when the Lord allows us to write and create. And I love the example you set of setting aside your book in order to write and give away the Bible study. You are right, that doesn’t make sense to us, but it does make sense inside of God’s bigger picture. Thank you for allowing Him to use you! I know others are blessed by you in so many ways!

    1. I’ve been collaborating with a painter named Brenda Calvert on this study, so when I was trying to think of an illustration her work came to mind. I’m amazed at how much the two crafts parallel one another. Yes, God does see the bigger picture and I am grateful He gives me enough faith to believe, trust, and follow.

  13. I am loving this study! Sarah walks us through Ephesians with a close and detailed look our worth in His calling. She tells us that we have access to God, a reminder we sometimes need. I look forward to going through this study over and over. You can read my full review HERE.

  14. The most important nugget I received from this study was that I am worthy. I’m not worthy because of how people see me I’m worthy because of how God sees me. I am thankful God didn’t give us the position of judging our worth. Being part of the launch team gave me the opportunity to read the study multiple times. Each time I reread the study I received something more out of it. I am now a participating student in this study and the first day God took me even deeper. This may be a simple, practical, time-friendly study; however don’t be surprised when deep truth hit you when you least expect it. My prayers is all who go through the Worthy of the Calling study see the benefits of taking this awesome study more than once.

    1. I agree JoEllen, we are so fortunate it is God who establishes our value and worth. I am so happy to hear you’ve enjoyed the study. I learn something new every time I re-read Paul’s words and I am so grateful the Bible is living and active in our lives. Thank you for all your support, encouragement, and prayers.

  15. Sarah thank you so much for writing this study. Your passion and dedication shine through. It’s a privilege to be on this path with you. What I’ve loved most about this study was the way that you crafted several sentences. Being a blogger made me perk up when they came my way! (eg “I envision Paul scribbling in earnest, unable to bother with punctuation until he got the entirety of God’s purpose for us down on parchment” lol).

A couple of the points (from various days ) of this study that stuck with me are

    1. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW GOD WITHOUT BEING TRANSFORMED BY THAT KNOWLEDGE.- How powerful and how freeing. HE is the one working in and through us to transform us into HIS image. When we know HIM, we are changing, always changing.

    2. You titled this study ‘ worthy of the calling” (you’ve received) and that’s just perfect because the other takeaway for me was WE DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME GIFTS BUT WE ALL HAVE THE SAME CALLING – TO BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST. We are all sisters and brothers in Christ and together we are the Church. We have the responsibility of teaching others and encouraging them to grow in the Lord (at the same time, making sure our walk with Him is not pushed aside). Our CALLING is to take HIM to those who don’t know HIM, and in this age , it gets easier and easier to reach people on the other side of the world. WE need to make sure our gifts are used in His glory and for His honour.

You do just that with your Ephesians Bible study ( and the Psalm 119 too!). Looking forward to the other things you’ll write.

    1. I love reading your take-aways from the study. Thank you Vanessa! You know how much crafting goes into a good sentence, so I’m glad to know a few hit the mark for you. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

  16. Sarah, great post… I often feel like I know what the Bible says about me, and my worth among other things, it just doesn’t seem to stick, I have to continually remind myself of God’s truth! One of the reasons I am loving your study, I need repetition to help lock it into my soul. Many Thanks! 8)

    1. Debra, I agree! It really is difficult to get the truth of God’s Word to stick. I often say negative words are extremely sticky, whereas positive, life-giving words are slippery. We just need to keep reminding ourselves Whose we are, and Bible study is the most effective way to do that. So happy you’ve decided to join us.

  17. “We are worthy because God has made us worthy.” This truth has dramatically changed my world! Thank you for getting me to dig deep into God’s Word first with the Psalm 119 study and now the Worthy of the Calling study. Because you took the step to obey God and create this study, you are truly changing lives! Saying “God use me” may involve risks and unknowns but the blessings far outweigh them.

    1. It’s all about Him, isn’t it LeNae? Even our worthiness is all about him. I am so glad you’ve joined me for these studies and taken the initiative to get into the Word yourself. I appreciate all your encouragement and support.

  18. Hey Sarah, I’m so happy to be a part of your journey into providing free online Bible studies, and I’m so happy to be a part of this launch. My prayer is that woman (and Men) will be drawn closer to the Lord through this study…especially myself. 🙂 I wan’t to say that I don’t know how you do it – because I am almost mystified by your energy, your focus, your discipline and your ability to get as much done as you do! But I already know the answer to my query – it’s certainly the Lord working in and through you! He equips those that He calls. Yeehaw!!! Blessing to you, my dear sister! And kudos to you for running your race with zeal and vigor!

    1. In recent week’s, I’ve been totally amazed at God’s ability to carry us when we need Him most. Looking back, it would be impossible for me to take credit for the majority of what has been released through my blog recently. Yes, I’ve had to persevere and work hard, but the math still doesn’t add up. God is filling in the gaps for me and I am so grateful. I’m so glad you hopped on the team, you are a joy to journey alongside.

  19. Sarah this is so wonderful. I was particularly touched by your obedience to move in God’s direction despite it not making sense. I am in a season of praying, searching and waiting, repeat. And many times I feel like what I am doing while I wait does not make sense, but hoping God uses my time spent for his glory. I just actually cracked open Ephesians last night and fell in love with it all over again.

  20. Hi Sarah,

I am so looking forward to this Bible study! I just loved the part about

    I am worthy.
    You are worthy.
    We are worthy.

Because of what God has done for us, our worthiness in His sight is guaranteed!

As a people please person I have never felt worthy and always strive to be worthy… thank you for allowing me to see in God I am worthy.

    1. It is such a great book. I’m so grateful for the time I’ve had to study it recently. I’ve learned so much, yet I feel I’ve just barely scratched the surface. That is what makes Bible study so fun, though. You never get to a place where you understand it all & there isn’t more to learn.
